Elijah Bloom shared his thoughts on East to West across
Russia: The Long Journey Home and wrote:
“I was told about this book by a work colleague, who
mentioned there was a passage devoted to Judaism and a critique of the
Holocaust. In a world that is becoming ever more violent and frightening, and
at times feels devoid of deeper meaning, I fear we may return to a time when
Jewish people are once again attacked, just as they were during the Nazi
onslaught in the Second World War. In this very honest and gentle memoir,
Christianson pleads with the world to change its ways and find that elusive
path towards peace before it is too late. I applaud the author for the research
carried out on Judaism and for the sensitivity and historical knowledge
required to show readers even a small part of what my people endured when they
were attacked and almost erased on European soil. The world said ‘never again’,
yet we continue to be attacked. We need books like East to West and
messages of condemnation so that we can see the world as it truly is.”
Reading Elijah’s review is profoundly moving. His response
speaks to the deepest moral and human questions explored in the book, and I am
honoured that the sections addressing Judaism and the Holocaust were received
with such care and understanding. Knowing the story resonated as a call for
reflection, compassion and peace gives this work its greatest meaning. I am
deeply grateful for his thoughtful engagement and his willingness to share such
a powerful perspective.
