John A. Hopkins shared his thoughts on East to West
across Russia: The Long Journey Home and wrote:
“I’m not a good reader, in the sense that I don’t read many
books, but once I put my hand on this book, I couldn’t put it down. I’ve been
to Russia and Ukraine three times, so a book where the protagonist travels the
Trans Siberian Express and documents his experiences and thoughts captured my
imagination. I believe the character only referred to as ‘N’ is a real person
and a past love of the protagonist, and I intuit that his heart has been broken
by the loss of that love. Perhaps this trip was a way the protagonist felt
would help him exorcise her ghost. Finally, I wish the protagonist all the best
for making a beautiful book available for us to read and experience.”
Reading John’s reflection is deeply touching. Knowing the
book connected so strongly, especially with someone who does not usually read
often, is incredibly meaningful. His thoughtful interpretation of the journey,
love and loss speaks directly to the emotional core of the story. I am truly
grateful that this experience resonated with him and that the journey stayed
with him beyond the final page.
